Ilya Sorokin signs with Islanders, cant play in postseason tournament – The Athletic

Ilya Sorokin is now officially an Islander — even though he gets no money from his one-year contract and can’t play for the team in the upcoming postseason tournament.

No matter, though. The saga to get one of the world’s top goaltenders into the fold has taken years, spanned two front-office administrations, hung in the balance during the pandemic and, finally, was permitted under a unique set of rules negotiated between the NHL and the Players’ Association during their collective bargaining agreement talks.

So the 24-year-old Sorokin is now an Islander, just over six years since then-GM Garth Snow selected Sorokin with the 78th pick of the 2014 draft.

The next step is to get Sorokin to Long Island. Like everything else in this process, it won’t be easy. Sorokin needs to obtain a work visa, get a flight and then quarantine for several days, long enough to have three negative COVID-19 tests, before he can enter the Isles’…
