Report reveals extent of Sabrina Ioenscu’s injury – 247Sports

Fans can finally exhale.

X-rays on Sabrina Ionescu’s left ankle have come back negative, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported on Friday night. Per Charania, the first overall pick has suffered an ankle sprain. 

Charania provided no timeline for a possible return. 

The Liberty play next on Sunday when they face the Phoenix Mercury on ESPN at 10 AM. 

The injury took place midway through the second quarter. Ionescu appeared to roll her ankle over the foot of Atlanta Dream guard Betnijah Laney while bring the ball up court. Ionescu immediately grabbed her left foot following the awkward landing. She was later carried by teammates off the court and directly to the locker room at IMG Academy in Bradenton (Fla.).

Ionescu’s Liberty were leading 27-25 at the time of her departure, and Ionescu had scored a team-best 10 points to that point of the game. She did so in just 12 minutes of play. The Liberty trailed 16-3 early in the first quarter before Ionescu led a rally to take the lead prior to her departure.

The New York Liberty fell to 0-3 without Ionescu, losing to the Atlanta Dream by a score of 84-78.

The injury followed an exceptional second professional game from Ionescu. She lit up the scoreboard with 33 points, seven rebounds and seven assists during Wednesday’s loss to the Dallas Wings. She knocked in 6 of 10 threes in the game.

Ionescu exploded for 33 points in her second professional game on Wednesday. She added seven assists and seven rebounds, and made six triples. She entered the day second in the WNBA in scoring.
